Trying Again

Apparently I am not a very good blogger.... way too long since I last updated. It's not that I don't think about posting.. I "write" lots of posts in my head, just never put them in my text box.

Here goes:

Things my Mom taught me (part 1):

Nearly everything I know about baseball I learned from my mom- Mom was a diehard Baltimore Orioles fan. We started following the Birds from Spring exhibition games on the radio. To this day I believe baseball play-by-play is better on the radio then watching a game on TV. My Orioles were Boog Powell at first base, Davey Johnson at 2nd, Mark Belanger at shortstop and Brook Robinson at third. Frank Robinson, Paul Blair and Don Buford in the outfield and Andy Etchebarren and Elrod Hendricks catching one amazing pitching staff that included Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar and Dave McNally (who along with Pat Dobson made for four 20 game winners in the '71 regular season. Three years straight (69, 70 and 71) the O's were in the World Series- Losing to the Mets, beating the Reds and losing to the Pirates. I remember going out into our yard and crying after the the O's lost in '71.

A year or so later a big envelope addressed to me arrived in the mail- it was an autographed picture of Boog Powell- " to Stephanie, good luck to you and your Denton Demons softball team- John "Boog" Powell -Mom met Joe Hamper an executive with the Orioles at party at a neighbors and told him about her daughter who played first base and idolized Boog Powell.

I played first base from 4th grade to high school to college and womens fast pitch leagues. Now that I'm over 50 I've settled for intramural slow pitch... still playing first base.

Our trip to Chichen Itza was one of the highlights of our Cancun vacation. The temples, the athletic stadiums and carvings reflected the Mayans the brutality of the civilization as well as their fascination with the heavens and the night sky. This is a photo of a large Mayan observatory at Chichen Itza. The Mayans documented solar cycles, lunar cycles and tracked the movement of the stars and planets.

I am not the most regular blogger...

In December my mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 gastric cancer. She is an amazingly active and vibrant 70 year old-- working at a day care center, gardening, always busy, and seemingly very healthy. Or not as it turns out. After several test and procedures to determine the primary tumor, her oncologists (at Hopkins and Easton Memorial Hospital) decided on a course of chemotherapy. She began chemo in February. The results were good... her cancer indicators fell and her tumors shrank. She was able to maintain a healthy weight and a positive outlook.

Then the cancer became resistant to the poison designed to kill it. Now she is on new chemo, more toxic than the last-- causing neuropathy in her hands, legs and feet. One of the tumors/swollen lymph nodes is pushing against her kidney- causing the kidney to swell.

On Friday I went to see the urologist with her. He was great. Explained the two options for dealing with the time that the kidney could become blocked. Discussed the pros and cons of each option and assured mom that now was not the time for either. Time now to see if the new chemo will shrink the tumors and relieve the pressure.

During the discussion, mom explained to the urologist how her cancer was discovered. She explained that in 2007 she had her gall bladder removed. And a couple of year latter, she started vomiting from time to time for no apparent reason. Her primary care provider noticed a knot in her abdomen and diagnosed a hernia -- probably the result of the gall bladder surgery. The the "hernia" has actually a tumor-

And the the "what if" ... The urologist asked if the gall bladder was tested? He said there is a rare form of cancer related to the gall bladder --- he was concerned. And mom and I wonder if the tests were done and if this could have been caught and treated early.

Today I saw Atlantis Launch

I started working at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center as a part-time grad student researcher in 1992. Over the years I have transitioned from planetary geology to science education at NASA. As an education and outreach lead I've seen three spacecraft launched from Kennedy Space Center - MESSENGER on a Delta II in 2004, New Horizons on an Atlas V in 2006 and LRO on an Atlas V in June. MESSENGER was a 2:30 AM launch and lit up the night sky well before the booming sound of the rocket reached us. New Horizons seemed to disappear out of site in an instant..with it's tiny payload atop the giant Atlas V. And LRO seemed to hesitate, as if it wasn't quite ready to leave the Earth.

Witnessing Atlantis was something completely different--human beings in a glider attached to multiple rockets, initially hidden behind the launch structure.

Suddenly a cloud of exhaust appears- and Atlantis takes off. I am not quite prepared as the sound rolls toward me and shakes my chest-leaving a euphoric feeling behind. It is a shared feeling, we all linger watching Atlantis streak away, catching a glimpse as the tanks are ejected and the shuttle begins to curve around the Earth.

LRO Enters Orbit Around the Moon

Early this morning the LRO spacecraft completed LOI (Lunar Orbit Insertion) ....changing LRO's trajectory so the moon captured LRO--So LRO is now orbiting the moon!

I'm in Cocoa Beach Florida a few days after LRO's launch. The spacecraft is now on it's way to the moon. It has been quite a ride for me- I became involved in the project before there was even a spacecraft. I was asked to develop and education and outreach plan for LOLA ( Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter) to go along with Goddard's proposal for an instrument to provide detail topography of the moon. Long story short- LOLA was selected and Goddard Space Flight Center was asked to build the spacecraft to carry LOLA and the other selected instruments into orbit around the moon.

About a year later I began working with the LRO team to develop an Education and Outeach program for LRO. I worked very closely with Nancy Neal Jones who oversees the Public Affairs component of LRO. We worked closely with six other instruments selected to go on the spacecraft and developed a comprehensive plan to engage folks about our mission. It has been an incredible 5+ year ride- watching the spacecraft and instruments move from CAD drawings and requierment documents to actual hardware. Watching the spacecraft being built in one of the Goddard cleanrooms, seeing the instruments delivered and integrated into the spacecraft...going a series of tests...all to prepare for launch and lunar orbit.
About 6 months ago I got the job opportunity of a lifetime- a chance to lead education and public outreach for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. I have continued to follow LRO closely and keep track of the teams' progress to launch...completing thermal vac, shipping to the Cape, integrated into the launch vehicle and finally on Thursday late afternoon witnessing the launch in person at Bananna Creek.

It was absolutely wonderful to share this with my family, friends and colleagues from the LRO family as we shared tears of joy and immense relief when LRO lifted off during the last launch opportunity of the day. I really believe the the folks collected on those bleachers collectively willed the approaching thunderstorms to retreat so we could all send LRO on its way to the moon!

A series of five 11-band images was captured by MESSENGER just after the spacecraft crossed the night/day line (the “terminator”). At the beginning of the movie, it is dawn in that region of Mercury and the Sun is just off the horizon. The long shadows cast by crater walls exaggerate the ruggedness of the terrain and highlight variations in topography. Though Mercury’s true colors are subtle, the 11 color bands of MDIS were combined in a statistical method used to highlight differences in color units. Older, low-reflectance, and relatively blue material is encroached by younger, relatively red smooth plains. Several lobate scarps or cliffs are observed, which are places where compressional stresses caused Mercury’s crust to fracture and shorten.

Originally uploaded by geostephI came into work on Monday and notice my office was kinda hot. I figured Goddard had the AC turned down over the weekend, so I wasn't too surprised. A few minutes later an email came from the building manager: the air conditioner in building 33 will be working at diminished capacity this week. Don't call maintenance....

On Tuesday I remembered to bring a little fan with me ..but left it in my car.. by 1:30 I couldn't stand the heat and headed to the parking lot to retrieve my fan...and here it is, working happily on my desk.

Logan stayed with his grandparents on the Eastern Shore while Frank and I were in Hawaii...and I think he may have picked up some bad habits. We were walking Sunday afternoon over at the bible college and I let Logan off leash to run around. Over the weekend there are few people around and the gates are closed..so Logan has a lot of space to roam. He disappeared for a bit, and when he returned he led me to this pile of big tires.. and as you can see he looked pretty proud of his stash. I'm just wondering where he buried the the tractors!

We have a quarter acre lot in an established neighborhood close to Goddard Space Flight Center (where I work). The summer after we moved in Frank started putting in flower beds throughout the yard. We have glads, dahlias, lilies, poppies, impatients, pansies and tulips.

Once we ran out of yard space for the flower beds (I wanted to preserve some of the lawn ;-) ), Frank started adding flower pots on our deck. This season we've had an incredible array of stargazers... orange and white and this beautiful pink. I'm not sure how he timed it, but we've had Stargazers blooming since mid June!

As luck would have it, my dad and a friend went out crabbing on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and came home with over a bushel of Maryland blue crabs. So I took Friday off, and Frank, Logan and I headed to Denton to spend the day with my folks and eat crabs.

We brought along our "snob beer" Loose Canon IPA from Clipper City Brewing Company... our latest very good IPA find. What you see here is the aftermath of our feast.. which also include cherry tomatoes fresh out of the garden and homemade peach cobbler with peaches from the tree in my parents yard. We all ate our fill and still there were plenty of crabs left to share with my brother and sister later.

As we drove home that evening we watched the line of cars crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge headed east for a week or weekend at the beach. Glad we were traveling west, and not caught in the long line of traffic! We moved to Denton from Baltimore City when I was 10. At that time there was only one bridge over the Bay.. and on summer weekends there where "one-way" patterns that opened the bridge to the Western Shore folks so they could get to the beach.. funny how our perspective changed when we moved... these damn Western Shore folks blocking our way so they could reach the beach :-)

I spent the last week fighting a cold...and stayed home from work yesterday and today. Frank is in Everett, WA with his daughter and her family..she had her gall bladder removed on Monday. So, it's just me and Logan....and I haven't really felt like taking Logan for a walk. This morning I woke up with a brutal sinus headache and decided to go ahead and get my antibiotic prescription filled. When I got home it was absolutely beautiful outside...and Logan and I both could use some fresh air! So I collected up my reading materials and we headed to the deck. Logan got plenty of exercise--lots of people were out and about and Logan had to check out each one as they walked down the street. Of course I had to get my camera to capture this amazing day near the end of November!

Here is one of the cool Halloween houses in my neighborhood. I'm sure the trick or treaters will enjoy going to the door here. And I have to admit this house is one of the reasons Frank and I did our custom pumpkin carving and I bought a string of pumpkin lights for the porch!

I took the pictures in this set during a walk through my neighborhood with Logan on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. I was quite taken by the skeleton made of plastic milk jugs...what an ingenious idea!

Yet another use for twitter

When I joined twitter in April I was interested in finding out how educators make use of web 2.0 and wanted to share some of the education projects that I work on at Goddard Space Flight Center. I am now a fully fledged member of the Socnet and tweeting is part of my daily life. We celebrate birthdays, pick football games, watch the world series together online and support our twitter friends in a variety of ways. Today I got to do something a little different--online power tool repair!

I just had returned from Lowes and checked into Twitter when Ashpreggo tweeted that her husband had just cut through the power cord of their new Skil saw. Here's the twitter conversation:

H just bought a Skil saw we can't afford to trim the cabinets in the house, 3/8 of the way through he cut straight through the cord...

is there any hope for the saw now, or do we just have to eat the $$$ and throw it away?

@ashpreggo you should be able to patch the cord back together with electrically tape..according to @fireton who has cut many a power cord

@geosteph really? he cut clean through it, that's safe?

@fireton said trim them back about 1/2 inch-match the colors-twist on set of colors together (same color) tape it. Do the same w/2nd color..

@geosteph hug @fireton for me, he's patching the cord together, just glad it didn't hit him when he cut it

@ashpreggo the wrap those two wires together with tape, then twist the third together, tape it then wrap all 3 together with tape pulling

Maybe I should have the car running and ready to take him to the ER just in case? why did I marry Tim the tool man?

My first day of taking 10 pictures a day for 30 days was September 25th-the day Frank and I flew to Alaska. We flew from Baltimore to Chicago to Seattle to Anchorage-(we had to stay on the plane) and finally to Fairbanks. Here is the view out of the airplane as we approached the Fairbanks Airport.

When I started 10 for 30 (ten pictures a day for 30 days) I planned on updating this blog with a daily picture of the day from my Flickr page. Thirty days later and here I am-finally. The picture here is from NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA. According to Flickr it is my most popular photo ordered by "interestingness".

I just set up Flickr to post directly to blogger...I will try to pick one photo from each day and try a blog post from Flickr in addition to what I plan to be more regular posts. I think my chances are pretty good--I have a big proposal due Dec 7th and this will be a great way to procrastinate!

Socnet birthday

A few years ago I treated myself to a mac laptop and airport extreme for my birthday. I sat in my backyard downloading songs on iTunes for a birthday playlist and I thought "How cool is this!" Wireless access to just about anything...books, dvds, music, email-lots of stuff...but to a community-never entered my mind. In April 2007 I entered the world of social networking through twitter. I was a very cautious twit, checking out the public timeline and watching tweets via twittervision. I added educators who were involved in web 2.0 (at the time I had no idea what web 2.0 was) and gradually grew a friends list. I fell in with a rowdy group of twitter knitters and pirates who celebrated Stripper Friday. My first blog arrived in May......Second Life and Facebook soon followed and one day I woke up in the socnet!

Yesterday was my first birthday celebrated via web 2.0. Birthday wishes on twitter; constant pokes, stickynotes, hugs, drinks, messages, and gifts on Facebook; a cell phone birthday serenade from @preppydude; and sharing my birthday cake last night with my twitter friends. I had a day-long birthday party! and I still have the big wide grin and the warm fuzzies thanks to friends across the ether.

PS I also now expect my family and friends to sing "Happy Birthday dear geosteph....."

Re: Is it worth someones life?

I don't know who you are or why you were in such a hurry....but when you cut in front of me yesterday on you way from the far left lane to far right lane you scared the sh*t out of me! Even if I would have survived the initial impact, I would have spun into oncoming traffic going 65+ mph on Rt 50. Would you have even bothered to stop if you clipped me? Would you look in your rear view mirror at the subsequent carnage?

PS I drive in the DC metro area all of the time. There are always careless drivers on the road, weaving in and out of traffic, no signals, tailgating etc. You are the first who really could have killed me.

I am a geologist

Last week one of my geologist friends tweeted the link to Geologist in the Uncyclopedia . From the introduction :

Geologists are 'scientists' with an unnatural obsession with rocks and alcohol. Often too intelligent to do monotonous sciences like biology, chemistry, or physics, geologists devote their time to mud-worrying, volcano spotting, fault poking, and high-risk colouring.
One of the main difficulties in communicating with geologists is their belief that a million years is a short amount of time. Consequently, such abstract concepts as "Tuesday Morning" and Lunchtime are completely beyond their comprehension. (This difficulty generates problems particularly when dealing with the girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse and attempting to explain why you were "gone for so long" or why something is taking "so long to occur.")

While the Uncyclopedia is a 'tongue in cheek' view of wikipedia, I found that a number of the observations under "how to spot a geologist" rang true for me and about me. Here are observations from Uncyclopedia that are me!

Hand-lens, compass, pen-knife, handcuffs etc. tied round neck with string.
Takes photos, includes people only for scale, and has more pictures of rock hammer and lens cap than of his family. (I took 500 pictures in Australia ...more than 300 were rocks)
Someone who considers a "recent event" to be anything that has happened in the last hundred thousand years.
Someone who licks and/or scratches & sniffs rocks or in case of china clay will eat it to prove its perfectly safe.
Someone who will willingly cross an eight-lane interstate on foot to determine if the outcrops are the same on both sides. (I've been run off the highway by state and local police more that once)
Someone who can pronounce the word molybdenite correctly on the first try. (yes I can!)
Someone who has hiked 6 miles to look at a broken fence that was "offset by a recent earthquake".
Someone who says "this will make a nice Christmas gift" while out rock collecting. (yes, my nieces, nephew and sisters have received rocks as gifts...and my brother got meteorites)
They look at scenery and tell you how it formed
Pockets tend to be filled with bits of rock.
The rockery moved into their spare room. (no...we have a rock garden in the living room)
They have more pairs of hiking boots than shoes.
Someone who prefers to explain the sequence of events shown in a cliff face to sunbathing
They plan extra time on trips to investigate road cuts along the way.
Someone who walks out of a bathroom and asks if you noticed the fossils in the stall dividers. (that's me! don't be afraid)
Someone who walks into an art museum and looks at the floors and columns commenting on the stylolites and fossils, rather than looking at the paintings. (guilty--I also walk through cities look at the building stones and occasionally pull my hand lens out of my pocketbook to get a better look at the minerals)

Views from the plane LAX to Seattle

I had great views from the right side on the plane on my flight from Los Angles to Seattle. Clear weather and prime Cascade Volcano viewing. The first volcano is Lassen Peak in California. I'm in the United Airlines terminal at LAX waiting for my plane to Seattle. The flight next to mine is now boarding for Maui....I'm tempted to switch planes. Then again there are many nice places in the Pacific NW and Frank is waiting for me there
